4 Things to Know About Your Freelance Client’s Audience Before Writing Content
Writing content is an essential part of any digital marketing strategy. However, to create content that resonates with your client's target audience, it's important to understand more about them in order to make your content as tailored as possible.
Whenever you onboard a client, ask about these five characteristics regarding their audience. Not only do these details help you create super-focused content, they also show potential clients that you're thoughtful and ready to drive their leads through the appropriate stages of the sales funnel.
Age Range
Age range is one of the most important factors to consider when creating content. Understanding the age of your audience will help you tailor tone, examples, and references throughout your content.
For instance, I'm a personal finance freelance writer. Money issues for younger audiences might include student loan debt or saving up for a down payment on a house. An older audience might want to hear about downsizing before retirement or estate planning.
Income Range
Knowing the income range of your target audience helps you tailor your content to their spending habits and preferences. For instance, if your audience has a higher income, you might create content related to luxury products or high-end services. If your audience has a lower income, you might create content that focuses on saving money, budgeting, or affordable alternatives.
In the personal finance space, I could write two articles on the same topic, like "How to invest for retirement." The advice would be completely different for average investors compared to high net worth individuals. I write for both audiences and know how to adjust based on the specific client.
Primary Pain Point
Pain points refer to the challenges, obstacles, or problems that your audience faces in their everyday lives. They're coming to your client for some type of solution. No matter what the assigned topic is, weave in these pain points and solutions from your client that can help. You don't have to call out direct products or services. Instead, position your client as an industry leader that has the expertise to solve their audience's problems.
Appropriate Call to Action
The call to action (CTA) is the action your freelance client wants their audience to take after reading your content. Understanding your audience's needs and preferences will help you create an appropriate CTA that encourages them to take action.
For example, if your target audience is interested in purchasing a product or service, your CTA might be to visit a specific product page. If your client's audience is interested in learning more about a particular topic, your CTA might be to download a free ebook or sign up for a newsletter.
Understanding your client's audience is essential to creating content that resonates with them. By considering their age range, gender, income range, primary pain point, and the appropriate call to action, you'll become an indispensable asset to your client's content creation process!
